Hunter Viceroy hollowing

this is how I use the Hunter Viceroy to hollow boxes. it is a cupped carbide and cuts instead of scrapes so it holds an edge much longer.

this is how I use the Hunter Phoenix cupped carbide tool. it's works better than a bottom feeder and because it's carbide holds an edge for a very long time.
controlling tool bounce

this video is about controlling tool bounce on out of round pieces. this same technique of anchoring the tool abd using your hips to control the cut also works well with carbide
funnel prevention video 2

this is a replacement video for my first funnel prevention video. I've made several improvements to make this device more functional and accurate. I've also added a version for mini lathes.
Turning a platter

this is how I turn a platter. I normally wear a Peke powered respirator faceshield but my phone won't accept a remote Mike and you can't hear me. I've turned probably 100 platters over the years and feel perfectly safe. I'm also out of the line of fire.

this is just a small selection of some of my turnings for a customer to see.
Nice work!
thanks for the vid john
good vid john thanks
Appreciate the video! I don’t want to be negative in my first comment on one of your videos, but I have to admit that I was cringing to see your ear protection hanging from the saw while the cuts were loud in the video. We won’t mind if you’re wearing them in the videos, it’s not like you have to listen for us to ask questions! 😊
John -- Thank you for making and sharing these videos. It is always nice to learn how others work.
Thanks John! I’ve had bad luck with paint, and this is a much easier process
Fabulous video. Can't wait to try the skew
thank for the vid john
Good to see you back on the channel. I love the work you do.
thanks for the vid john
I'm a Viceroy fan ... Mike Hunter visited our turning club last year, and demonstrated the Viceroy. I made an adapter sleeve for the Viceroy and use it with my Simple Hollowing rig ... zero vibration and easy-peasy!
Excellent tool demo. I have 2 other Hunter tools and love them. Love the beefy look of the tool.
Thanks John I love mine too. I had a Trend ani it was heavy. I use This one in the shop and to cut grass as it shades my eyes like a ball cap. No grass and pollen dust.
thanks john
What is runtime?
Thanks John.
thank for the vid john
Thanks John, We always appreciate your to the point tips.
Good video. Never thought the roughing gouge could be so versatile. I turn pens. Would the push cut work with various synthetic materials? I realize that each has certain characteristics regarding turning. Thanks for the video.
Good to see you John. Great job! Josh B. TSW
I'm definitely going to do that for my platform. Set up for the skews and scrapers is always bothersome.
thanks for the vid john
Great video- I have a nearly identical method for when I don't freehand. Also using a spacer block that is bigger than the one used to grind the main bevel is useful to reduce the heel. Mine don't have magnets but that is a great idea I'm going to use.
Thanks for putting these videos together. You do such a great job of presenting the methods and techniques. Even though I already used some of them you still showed me more ways to improve my work.
Thanks.
John -- Thanks for posting these videos. You're generous with your knowledge. It's appreciated.
This is my experience as well. I’ve decided from now on just to get 80 grit wheels because it’ll sharpen faster and makes no difference that I can see on the turning as long as the tool is all the way sharp. It seems to me that the only thing sharpening would affect is the burr that it leaves behind, but the burr is not what cuts the wood. it’s the angle that matters. The burr is removed almost immediately anyway.
thanks john nice vid
John, very interesting! I suppose the thickness of the burr determines partially how long the cutting burr last, consequently I always thought why bother with 300 grit or higher? What is your view? Thanks and stay safe.
The tool used at 3:50 l made one same but l used a piece of Tungsten carbide out of a masonry bit and it worked great, have you tried using a piece of tungsten carbide?
Excellent instruction! Thank you.
Thank you! Great demonstration of the colors and how to shape the tip.
Another awesome video. Thank you.
Thanks for the video. The first tool looked like a skew but had different size bevels. I first thought it was a Bedan tool but noticed the two bevels.
Thanks for the video. You have emphasized the need for practice to keep one's techniques at peak. I noticed that the top/toe of the skew had grind marks. Do you grind the bevel and clean up the toe and heel of the skew?

THANK YOU! I've been leaving my skew in the drawer because I just could not get it right. This is the most helpful tutorial and explanation of the technique I've seen. Excellent teaching.
That's definitely true I've made the mistake of grabbing a skew on a critical project down to the final dimensions and making a fatal mistake because I did just that I didn't practice after having not used it in quite some time so good advice
Nice tool movement, John. One thing that would be helpful to me, a beginner, is to say how many RPMs the lathe is running at. Thanks!

Good job
John, your time and efforts are greatly appreciated. I am finding that I enjoy using the skew. I don't know where they came from, but I have five skews lined up in my tool rack, each with a different angle (one is sharpened along a curve) and a variety of bevel angles. I practice with them regularly hoping to some day achieve at least a minor state of proficiency. I am new to wood turning and age and health relegate me to a chair (actually I call it my throne) in order to run the lathe. Any hints on body movement?😊. I pick up a little bit from each video, so I appreciate them all.

What a beautiful little box! Loved the tutorial, very detailed😁
Welcome back! I missed your fantastic instructional videos.
Thank you John. Very patient and informative. Now, if you'll excuse me, I think I'm going to go downstairs and see if I can find my skew.
Just a totally complete and easily to understand video on box turning. This video and Kirk Deheer's video are the 2 best instructional demonstrations on box making available out there. Many thanks John for taking the time and effort putting this lesson together, SUPER JOB! 👍
Well thought I would say thanks for the video I've watched it now a few times wondering if I should make the purchase. I just got my tool 5/8 with handle today and looking forward to giving it a try. Your video was very helpful.
Excellent, well explained and demonstrated video!! Thank you!!
Great video , I agree this is one of the best skew video i see .
